Snow and sand fencing is a slatted barrier designed not to block wind, but to slow it. As wind passes through the gaps between laths, it loses speed and drops the particles it's carrying, creating controlled drifts on the downwind side. That makes placement predictable and manageable, which is exactly the point.

The same principle applies to sand: installed on the windward side of a dune or coastal area, it builds up the formation gradually rather than letting wind scatter material unpredictably. DOT contractors, coastal land managers, and agricultural operators all work with it for the same reason: controlled deposition, not total blockage.
